Rural Retreat- Designing a Self-Sufficient Edible Landscape
Type: Rural Location: Tallai, Queensland
Design Installation Maintenance

Project Overview
Client Information:
Ben and Lena owned a large rural property and wanted to transform it into a more usable and productive space, with the goal of becoming self-sufficient in their fruits and vegetables. Their vision included a large vegetable garden designed to be completely wildlife-proof, ensuring consistent harvests.
They also requested a productive fruit orchard featuring an abundance of avocados, bananas, oranges, and other fruit varieties to support their self-sufficiency goals. The design aimed to maximise the property’s potential while creating a functional and sustainable edible landscape.
-
Self-Sufficiency in Fruits and Vegetables: Design a space to support self-sufficiency by producing a consistent supply of fruits and vegetables.
Wildlife-Proofing: Create secure, wildlife-proof areas to protect crops from local wildlife, such as wallabies and kangaroos.
Vegetable Garden: Design and establish a large, wildlife-proof vegetable garden for consistent and reliable harvests.
Fruit Orchard: Incorporate a productive terraced fruit orchard with over 80 fruit trees and berry bushes, including avocados, bananas, and oranges.
Soil Remediation: Develop a comprehensive soil remediation plan to enhance the productivity and health of planted crops.
Shaded Grow Tunnel: Build a large grow tunnel with 30% shade cloth to protect crops from extreme summer heat and wildlife.
Maximizing Property Potential: Optimize the use of the property to create a functional and sustainable edible landscape.
Sustainability and Functionality: Combine functionality and sustainability in the design to meet the self-sufficiency goals in a challenging rural environment.
